Sub Floor and Site Condition Requirements
Gym Floor Installation – Job Site Preparation and Sub floor requirements.
Before you start your new rubber rolls, rubber tiles or gym floor installation, you need to make sure that your job site is properly prepared and that your sub floor is in the proper condition.
We will begin with job site preparation.
Job Site Preparation:
New Construction: Gym floor installation or weight room floor installation should not begin until all other trades have completed their work and are finished in the areas.
We once had a customer that installed his floor before the drywall was completed and he had to spend several days cleaning up the drywall dust and removing the white scuffs on the weight room flooring from the gypsum.
If the situation occurs that you have to complete your gym floor installation first, before the other trades are finished, you must cover and protect the gym floor with plastic sheeting, Kraft paper or tarps.
The rooms that you are installing the floor into should not be open to the weather and should be maintained at a minimum temperature of 65 degrees for 48 hours.
Be sure to remove all trash and debris and make sure that any heavy equipment or furniture has been removed as well.
Sweep and clean the sub floors and repair any damage to the sub floor.
Sub Floor Preparation.
Sub floor preparation is critical to ensure a quality rubber gym flooring installation. Sub floor preparation includes making sure you have a level and stable sub floor that is free of any dirt, dust, and any type of chemicals that could interfere with the bonding of the rubber rolls or rubber tiles to the sub floor.
Sub floors should be free of paint, wax grease, oil sealers, old adhesive and any other material that would interfere with the bonding of the rubber floor and the floor.
If the sub floor is not level, we recommend using cement based patching and leveling compounds. We do not recommended suing gypsum based patching and leveling compounds. Refer to the manufactures instructions of the patching and leveling compounds.
If a leveling compound is used, be sure to let it dry thoroughly before applying adhesive. Moisture in the compound can cause the adhesive to bubble and release from the sub floor.
Concrete sub floors:
Concrete should have a minimum of 3000 psi and for new concrete should be cured for a minimum of 28 days. It is critical that the cement be fully cured and dry before any installation begins.
All cracks, saw cuts, non moving joints and indentations should be filled with cement based patching compound.
Expansion joints can cause a floor covering to fail so all expansion joints should be covered with an expansion joint cover that is designed for resilient flooring.
Wood Sub Floors:
Wood sub floors should be a minimum of 1” thick with double construction. The floor must be rigid and free from movement with a minimum of 18” ventilated air space below.
If an under layment is needed please use American Plywood Association (APA) under layment with a minimum thickness of ¼”. Chip board, particle board, Masonite and lauan are not considered suitable under layments.
At the risk of repeating ourselves, the sub floor is critical to a high quality finished rubber floor or sports floor. Imperfections in the sub floor will eventually show imperfections in the finished sports floor.
